PRESS RELEASE: COALITION FOR SAFE FOOD AND BEVERAGE CHOICES SUPPORTS FDA’S REVIEW PROCESS FOR FOOD AND FOOD ADDITIVES
American Cancer Society National Board of Directors Past Chairman defends the FDA’s review process and underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to public health
In response to a story published by the Washington Post, the following is a statement by Dr. Arnold Baskies, past Chairman of the National Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute (NCI) fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, and an expert advisor to the Coalition for Safe Food and Beverage Choices:
“The FDA is the trusted voice on what is safe for Americans and is considered the gold standard for food safety around the world. It has demonstrated consistent commitment to credible scientific analysis, and unwavering dedication to public health for more than 115 years.
“I agree with the FDA that the appropriate expert body to review the safety of aspartame is the WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). As we await the authoritative JECFA report, it is more important than ever to avoid confusion and support the FDA and its comprehensive scientific review process for foods and food additives.”
